3. Just so you know, this is a 7" record. It's A-Side containing the track "16 Military Wives", and the B-Side having a demo version of "From My One True Love (Lost at Sea)", both originally from the album Picaresque. While this is nice find, it still leaves me a tad disappointed.4/5(3).

6. This is the shortest and also the most difficult to locate CD single from the Decemberists. "16 Military Wives" is the anti-establishment hilarious noveau-Pete Seeger rant against nationalist arrogance and hubris off the 'Picaresque' album, and the Kafka-like "KingdoM of Spain" comes from the 'Picaresquities' EP that was issued with the vinyl version of that album (and later on it's own CD)/5(2).

8. The one standout, the apple among the oranges, is ''16 Military Wives'', which on first listen doesn't seem to fit the Picaresque aesthetic. It's not a story, but a protest song that uses a slick horn line and Meloy's loosest vocals yet (I distinctly hear a ''whoo!'') to tally the mathematics of war-- /5().
